To begin with, it means that someone who served our country owns the majority of the business and is involved in the day-to-day operations. To that point, the owner and Creative Director of Abbott Animation, Don Abbott, served as a Test Conductor and Computer Operator in the U.S. Army at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. While there, he tested various weapons systems that the U.S. Army was considering buying from civilian manufacturers. Among other things, he tested laser range finders, medium range missiles, and bomb dispersion systems. In addition, he worked on the world’s largest simulated nuclear bomb that was detonated at White Sands. It created a mushroom cloud and left 300 foot crater in the desert floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From a practical business perspective, qualifying as a VOSB allows for a competitive edge during application for government contracts. It can expand the reach to additional customers and communities. According to the National Veteran-Owned Business Association, 70% of Americans prefer to purchase goods and services from veteran-owned businesses. This can provide a much needed jump start in today\u2019s busy world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So those are the benefits, but how does one actually go about acquiring that fancy piece of paper?<\/p>\n\n\n\nSaying that you first start by \u201csubmitting an application to the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA)\u201d doesn\u2019t seem to actually encompass all of the work that actually goes into the submission process. The 90 day recommended lead time is actually necessary both for the initial certification and recertification, not only to allow for submission review but also to give sufficient time for the questions and follow-ups that inevitably happen. Our recertification process lasted approximately two months, with at least 70-80 hours of time put in gathering the necessary documents, writing up the material needed and having detailed phone conversations with various agents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
